Knitted Gollies and Village People - what next at the Waimate Winter Show ?

Waimate Winter Show

Waimate Winter Show, Waimate, 6 July 2007 - 7 July 2007

A Festival of Home produce, art work, Children's competitions, Vegetables, Poultry, Rabbits and Cats. A good old Winter Show like we all remember. So hurl a bottle of bubbly into the back of the beemer and head for the charming little town of Waimate nestled into the Hunter hills in South Canterbury that weekend. This is one of the earliest settlements in Canterbury and still boasts one of the original dwellings made by the first European settlers out of a complete Totara tree. You will be captivated by the architectural style of its English and Catholic Churches. St Augustine's has an exquisite Liche gate that you must go and see. On the old Mill Road you may be able to spot a Judas tree that has no apparent leaves, but pink blooms all over its branches. If you are a hunter a visit to the taxidermist, Craig Dempster is a must.

The Winter Show is held at the Waimate Stadium and you only have to ask directions at the local garages because it is such a friendly town. All the old breeds of poultry will be on display from Dorkings, to Australorpes. Old English Game are always on the show benches at Waimate as they keenly compete for numerous New Zealand and South Island Championships. The cages and equipment go back to the 19th century and there is a great tradition to the Poultry exhibitions that showcase the exotic biodiversity of the province. Cagebirds are popular at this show with many exhibitors coming great distances to show their birds. Only the best vegetables are shown and boy can they grow monsters there. You get the chance to buy them too, as there is an auction at 4pm on the Saturday as the Show winds down. My favourites are the knitted golliwogs in the homecraft sections. School children all get to participate with poultry orientated colouring competitions. If you adore cats then they are there on the Saturday only, and they have some nice ones in Waimate. Don't forget the Yellow Wallaby Shed off the main Highway South. If you pass it going South you have missed the turnoff or conversely if coming North, you are approaching the turnoff.

Kevin and Noeline Wells will give you a warm and hearty welcome and they have a lovely kitchen where you can freshen up with the local cuisine.
